Wells Climate Strike, 24th May 2019
Friends from Street Quaker Meeting were pleased to attend the Wells Climate Strike, outside Wells Town Hall on 24th May 2019.
This protest was initiated and led by students from Wells Blue School as part of an international day of action by school pupils to raise awareness of the need for action on climate change. The demonstration in Wells was addressed by the Year 10 student organisers, by the Mayor of Wells, by a representative from the Methodist Church, and by Sarah Briton, (Member of Street Meeting and newly-elected city-councillor for the Green Party).

It was supported by Sustainable Wells, and other local organisations. Quakers were well-represented – 17 of us, including two children, were there for different periods of time, and our banner was prominent and visible. 4 of us had met the previous week to begin making the banner - reading “Quakers for Climate Justice”. It was completed during the week and had its first outing.
The next planned school strike is on September 20th and we intend to be there again with the banner.

"We do not own the world, and it's riches are not ours to dispose of at will. Show a loving consideration for all creatures, and seek to maintain the beauty and variety of the world. Work to ensure that our increasing power over nature is used responsibly, with reverence for life. Rejoice in the splendour of God's continuing creation".
